Welcome to the web site for a-technic - the UK registered charity specialising in technology to help people with disabilities.

a-technic's charitable objects (i.e. our 'mission', or purpose) are basically to research, develop and promote adaptive and assistive technologies. That means any application of technology that helps people with physical disabilities to cope with day to day living, to integrate better with society at large and to get more out of life.

The projects below are what we are currently working on. Although there is a bias towards projects to benefit the vision impaired, this is not an intentional policy of a-technic - it is simply that these are the most promising ideas that have come up so far.

For more than 20 years, Apple has provided new and innovative solutions for people with disabilities, allowing them to access — and enjoy using — advanced technology products such as the Mac, iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV.
In fact, Apple has built many accessibility solutions directly into its products as standard features. VoiceOver, screen-reading technology that’s part of Mac OS X, provides voice description and offers plug-and-play support for braille displays. For those who find it difficult to use a mouse, Spotlight search technology makes it easy to launch applications and find files, images, calendar events, or Wikipedia entries using a keyboard. And iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, and other products support closed captioning.

ASD Visual Aids was formed in October 2008. Its aim is to support communication for children, young people and adults with social communication difficulties such as Autism. Research has shown that many children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder are able to process visual tools more effectively than the spoken word. We have designed visual tools and solutions for home, care, work and educational settings that empower children and young people with these difficulties to effectively access communication.
