Welcome to the web site for a-technic - the UK registered charity specialising in technology to help people with disabilities.
a-technic's charitable objects (i.e. our 'mission', or purpose) are basically to research, develop and promote adaptive and assistive technologies. That means any application of technology that helps people with physical disabilities to cope with day to day living, to integrate better with society at large and to get more out of life.
The projects below are what we are currently working on. Although there is a bias towards projects to benefit the vision impaired, this is not an intentional policy of a-technic - it is simply that these are the most promising ideas that have come up so far.

CHuC (the Ceiling Hoist users Club) was set up by the late Sue Maynard Campbell MBE, M.D. of Equal Ability CIC, to promote the interests of those disabled people who need to use hoists and particularly those who need, or prefer, ceiling track hoists (also caller tracker and tracking hoists). This website is designed to bring together accommodation providers, hoist suppliers and hoist users for the benefit of all. Sue had been a hoist user for most of her life and understood the frustrations and inconvenience of not having anywhere she could stay without a good deal of inconvenience and additional expense. Her aim was to have ceiling hoist facilities provided as the norm and CHuC continues to persuade, cajoul and educate accommodation providers to continue her campaign.

Children Today is the charity that raises funds to provide specialised equipment for children and young people with disabilities throughout the UK. Our aim is to ensure that every disabled child and young person fulfils their potential and leads an active childhood. With your support we can achieve this.
Children Today relies totally on voluntary donations, we receive no funding from the government or social services. There is no statutory right for young people with disabilities to be provided with equipment they need by the government or NHS, so we fill that gap. We provide this service for children and young people right up to the age of 25.

Remap is a very special charity, working through a nationwide network of dedicated volunteers. These inspiring people use their ingenuity and skills to help people with disabilities to achieve much-desired independence in some aspect of their lives, or to enjoy leisure opportunities previously closed to them.
Remap’s unique pieces of special equipment are tailor-made by volunteer experts and given free to the people who need them. Because, as well as being inventive and skilful, they also care about people in their local communities who have disabilities – even a combination of them - which mainstream services have not been able to counteract. Our volunteers think these people matter a great deal - enough to give their time and energies for free, taking the trouble to ensure that each item they make really suits the individual person concerned and does the job it is meant to do.
